South
Africa has always been a fascinating place for adventurous travellers to
visit, but in the past year, it has turned into a destination that has cemented
its place into the minds of holiday makers around the world as a place that is
perfect for their annual vacation. This is because of the hard work of the South
African Tourism team led by South African Tourism Australasia General Manager
Bangu Masisi. It is the success of this small group of six people that drew a
crowd of industry professionals to the Lion Gate Lodge at Sydney’s Royal Botanic
Gardens on Tuesday evening.
It was an evening that celebrated the success of this year’s campaign to
entice Australians to visit the spectacular natural wonders and brilliant
culture of South Africa. As Masisi said: “Interest in the destination is
growing.” In this year alone, 6.2 million tourists visited South African shores
and they have also seen a 14.1% growth in tourist arrivals between January and
June of this year in comparison to the same time last year – a testament to the
destination’s growing reputation as a top place to visit.
To support this ongoing operation to encourage Australian visitors, South
African Tourism has planned a ‘Cinema Campaign’ for early next year, based
around the beauty and variety of South African culture. They have based a
campaign around the cinema because they have seen niche in Australian culture
that brings us to the movies to relax and unwind. To associate this feeling with
South Africa is important as it removes the negative associations that people
traditionally have of African nations. Each country has both its positives and
negatives and it is South Africa Tourism’s job to highlight the fact that the
fantastic possibilities of the nation far outweigh its negative history.
As perception plays such an integral role in the way that the country is
perceived, South Africa Tourism has taken a step to understand the
misrepresentation that they have to contest every time they try to promote it as
a leading tourist destination. “What can we do together to make it better than
what it is today?” asked Masisi. It is not an easy question to ask and possibly
an even harder question to answer. The response from the people gathered at the
event was enthused and positive, shouting the praises of the country’s “enormous
cultural diversity”. While they are not blind to the problems that South Africa
has and continues to face, like Masisi, they focus on the positives that
highlight and encourage the growth of both the industry and economy.
This can be seen in the dramatic growth of the business tourism market in
Australia-South African relations. South Africa has seen a growth in the MICE
market and has been highlighted as a point of interest in the South African
Tourism office. In a way, the business tourism market is the “final piece of the
puzzle” following the success of the other areas of South African tourism
promotion in Australia.
The success that South Africa the Destination has seen has been a result of
the rallying support of industry partners. Airlines such as South Africa Airways
have backed the beautiful country as a top tourist destination and have marked
it on the world wide map. This can be seen with the upcoming FIFA World Cup in
2010 which will be held in South Africa. To be singled out as a host nation for
an international event is not just an honour, but have shown that South Africa
the Country has come that one step closer in achieving the status and
recognition as a wonderful culturally-diverse nation that they so rightly
deserve. |
