Luang Prabang promises to open visitors’ eyes to the cultural sights of this
quaint colonial town in Laos. At the heritage
Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel, a

are located right at the hotel’s doorsteps in the heart of town.
 Temples are a main attraction, with at least 40 Buddhist temples dotted
around the town district, housing hundreds of monks and novices. Wat Xieng
Thong is a Buddhist monastery built in 1560 as a Royal Patronage temple, and
considered a spectacular example of the traditional Luang Prabang style. Phu
Si, meaning Holy Mountain, is famed for its views of the town as well as
Mekong and Nam Khan rivers.
Of interest are the Pak Ou Caves, which are set into a high vertical
cliff on the banks of the Mekong River. Venture into these caves, which are
only accessible by boat, to find a treasure trove of hundreds of Buddha
images.
About an hour out of town lies some stunning natural wonders, such as the
Kwang Si Falls, which cascades over limestone formations. If on an
excursion, visit the weaving villages of Ban Phanom and Ban Xieng Lek, where
traditional silk weaving is still practiced.
The Royal Palace Museum is also a must on any itinerary. The Museum is
housed in the former Royal Palace, and visitors will be able to sneak a peek
into the authentic private quarters of the royals. A highlight is the
Prabang, a sacred Buddha image for which Luang Prabang was named.
Getting There
Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel is located just ten minutes from Luang Prabang
International Airport. The direct flight from Bangkok to Luang Prabang takes
1 hour and 40 minutes. Guests may also choose to take ground transport from
Chiangmai to Luang Prabang, an approximate 8 to 10 hours’ drive depending on
border crossing, or take a 12-hour sightseeing ride from the capital city
Vientiane.
