BurJuman,
the region's most luxurious shopping destination, has today unveiled its lineup
of innovative and creative events for Art and Fashion 2006, the two-week long
celebration of all things with a creative edge. With event highlights
including an international art exhibition and fashion shows, as well as
workshops for 'dabblers' and 'divas' alike, BurJuman Art and Fashion 2006 runs
from November 20th to December 3rd.
The first major event - Thursday 23 at 7:30 pm - is the gala performance of
'Runway Art.' A brand-new event, where thirteen locally-based emerging fashion
designers will showcase whimsical and striking fashions from a dizzying range of
materials (glass, wire, and paper) and an industry expert will select the
winning design, the winner receiving the opportunity to exhibit his/her
collection at BurJuman. Other stagings of Runway Art will be held on the 24th,
25th, and 30th of November and the 1st and 2nd of December; all performances are
at 7:30 pm opposite the Watch Gallery.
Sabina Khandwani, head of Marketing and PR at BurJuman, said, 'This year we
stretched ourselves to provide the most unusual, quirky, and never-before-seen
in Dubai exhibits and events. We have brought together an astonishing mix of
international and local artists, each with their own particular style and
favorite medium, be it paint, costume or photography'.
'At BurJuman we believe our customers know that fashion is an art, and with
these events we are making art out of fashion,' Khandwani said.
Shoppers will be able to muse over a number of excellent displays like the
Kimono Collection, which spans 100 years of kimono design. It has been curated
by Sheila Cliffe, who has collected the delicate, beautiful garments for 18
years and was the first non-Japanese to graduate from the kimono school. Her
collection, which includes pieces for men, women and children, can be viewed
daily between 10 am and 10 pm on the Glass Bridge, Level 2, North Village.
Demonstrating that collecting is also an art is 'Leaders and Celebrities,' a
collection of original photographs, letters and postcards, complete with
signature, of over 120 political figures, among them the late President, H.H.
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, the late Ruler of Dubai, Diana, Princess of
Wales, Evan Peron and Grace Kelly. The collection is the first of its kind to be
shown in Dubai and can be seen daily between 10 am and 10 pm in front of Chanel,
Level 2, South Village.
Celebrities are not the only things that sparkle at BurJuman. As one might
expect from Dubai's most comprehensive luxury shopping mall, Swarovski Studio
will set up shop daily between 10 am and 10 pm between Rivoli and Café Hediard.
There, shoppers will not only be able to view pieces from the new Swarovski
collection, but also get the opportunity to design their own creation by
bringing their own bag, scarf, t-shirt or any other accessory, and having it
'crystallized' by staff.
International artists will also be on hand and displaying their collections
throughout the mall; celebrated German artist Heidi Winkler, who has been dubbed
the 'artist with heart' due to her subject matter, will be exhibiting her work
for the first time in Dubai in the Observatory between 10 am and 10 pm.
An array of different workshops is on offer daily for those who want to get
their hands dirty and express themselves. These are:
• Sculptures by Iranian artist Shahin Atigheh: working with clay. Daily 6 to
10 pm opposite Kenneth Cole.
• Origami for Kids by Ayushy Sajnani: the ancient Japanese art of folding
paper into myriad different shapes. From 6 - 11 years old. Daily 7 to 9 pm
opposite Marina Rinaldi.
• T-shirt painting by Javed Akhtar: paint designs using various colours and
styles. 8 years and above. Daily between 10 am to 10 pm in Fountain Court.
• Jam Jar: an artistic free-for-all where you can let out your inner artist
with the assistance of Jam Jar's friendly staff. 8 years and above. Daily 10 am
to 10 pm, Fountain Court. |
